Joy to the World
The “weird” Christmas cover of 2021: Joy to the World. In 5/8 and 9/8. Very cool.
A Romantic’s Guide to King Crimson
Romantic arrangements of various King Crimson songs performed by Deborah and Pat Mastelotto and various contributors from the Three of a Perfect Pair camp.
Best Weird Music of 2021
Lots of amazing new music in 2020. Here’s our list of the best releases.
Buke & Gase’s “A Record Of…”
Buke & Gase are an experimental pop band who improvise & edit down the results until only the grooviest parts remain. They play custom instruments of their own invention (software and hardware). Their new collaboration record with So Percussion is called "A Record Of..." and can be purchased on Bandcamp here: https://bukeandgase.bandcamp.com/album/a-record-of-2
Tally Hall’s “Good Day”
Tally Hall's "Good Day" music video blew my mind when it came out in 2010 and still amazes me today. Find out why!
Silent Night in 5/8
Here's some weird new Christmas music for you featuring James Partridge on piano. This one is in 5/8 with a descending chromatic bass line. It's very tricky to play and to think through the chord changes.
We Three Kings in 5/4
Here's the amazing Nick Goodwin performing my arrangement of "We Five Kings," which is "We Three Kings" in 5/4 as a tribute to Dave Brubeck. I was absolutely blown away by Nick's performance. He's playing a B-bender telecaster and a drop D tuning. He came up with that all on his own.
Weird Christmas Albums
It's easy to hate Christmas music. And sometimes it's deserved. If you're like me, you're probably wearing earplugs to the grocery store by now. However, there is a lot of wonderfully weird Christmas music out there for you to enjoy without sacrificing your tastes. Here are my recommendations.
Mediaeval Baebes’ “Prayers of the Rosary”
Join us for a live interview with Mediæval Bæbes leader Katharine Blake and multi-instrumentalists Charlie Cawood and Michael York. We will discuss their new album, "Prayers of the Rosary." Find out more here: https://mediaevalbaebes.bandcamp.com/album/prayers-of-the-rosary
Panzerballett’s “Planet Z”
Join us for a live interview with guitarist and Panzerballett mastermind Jan Zehrfeld. We're going to talk about the excellent new album, "Planet Z." Lots to discuss and listen.
Dillinger Escape Plan’s “Calculating Infinity”
Calculating Infinity (1999) by The Dillinger Escape Plan is one of the most brain-bending, brutal albums I've ever heard. It's a no-holds-barred tornado of complexity, angst, and genre-defying musicianship. You can hate it, you can love it, but you can't ignore it.
Laurie Anderson’s “Bright Red”
Laurie Anderson's "Bright Red" features a song called "The Puppet Motel," which has terrified me since I was 12 years old. Listen and tell us what you think.
Fabio Mittino and Bert Lams’ “Music of the Stars”
Join us for a live interview with guitarists Fabio Mittino and Bert Lams (of the California Guitar Trio). We are going to be talking about their new CD, "Music of the Stars." It's a collection of music written by Thomas de Hartmann and arranged for the first time for guitar.
Chris Opperman’s “Chamber Music From Hell”
Join us for a live interview with composer Chris Opperman to discuss his new release "Chamber Music from Hell." He'll be joined by the album's producer Kurt Morgan. André Cholmondeley will conduct the interview.
FraKctured Performance
In this piece, I detail the difficulties of learning FraKctured as opposed to learning and performing it’s older sibling, Fracture. I close with a performance at the end of the video. It’s adequate!
